What I am Reading Lately

Part of my Day Zero List was to read the Top 100 Books of All Time (from the BBC list). Kristy and I have been doing this long-distance book club for many years (probably seven years now), and we were running out of ideas. So I found this list of the Top 100 Books Everyone Should Read, put out by BBC, and we each pulled out all the books we'd already read. We ended up with a list of 32 books to read in our LDBC. Mostly British novels, which I appreciated. I love British novels.

In the last several months, we've read the first nine books on our list, and we have 23 remaining. Right now, I'm working on Goodnight, Mr. Tom, since she's finished it already, and I've got the next two on hold at the library. I really have enjoyed this list. It got me reading books I never would have picked up before. And of course, it's all fiction, which I love. Here's the list of what we have read and what we have to read, of the 32 books that we hadn't read already.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams
Birdsong, Sebastian Faulks
The Catcher in the Rye, JD Salinger
War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy
Middlemarch, George Eliot
The Story Of Tracy Beaker, Jacqueline Wilson
The Pillars Of The Earth, Ken Follett
A Town Like Alice, Nevil Shute
Dune, Frank Herbert
Goodnight Mister Tom, Michelle Magorian
The Shell Seekers, Rosamunde Pilcher
A Suitable Boy, Vikram Seth
Swallows And Amazons, Arthur Ransome
Crime And Punishment, Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Noughts And Crosses, Malorie Blackman
Mort, Terry Pratchett
The Magic Faraway Tree, Enid Blyton
Guards! Guards!, Terry Pratchett
Perfume, Patrick Süskind
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, Robert Tressell
Night Watch, Terry Pratchett
The Secret History, Donna Tartt
Double Act, Jacqueline Wilson
The Twits, Roald Dahl
I Capture The Castle, Dodie Smith
Holes, Louis Sachar
Vicky Angel, Jacqueline Wilson
Cold Comfort Farm, Stella Gibbons
The Godfather, Mario Puzo
Katherine, Anya Seton
Kane And Abel, Jeffrey Archer
Girls In Love, Jacqueline Wilson

My favorite so far was Pillars, although it wasn't Kristy's. But I absolutely adored it. I love cathedrals, and the main character in that book is really the Kingsbridge Cathedral. It sounds strange, yes, but trust me, it's not at all strange. I also really loved Dune, which I hadn't read before, and hadn't seen the film. All-in-all, I've enjoyed all the books. And that makes me excited to read more. I'm not sure when we'll get through the whole list, but we're plugging away. Of course, by the time my 1001 days are up, I'll be done with the list. :-) Or I'll have to pay $5! :-)

As for the reviewing, I'm in the middle of a book for the Enduring Romance Blog. New from Zondervan. Look for the review Tuesday. I'm also reading the latest Jill Eileen Smith book on the Wives of David. And I'm trying to work through a couple of reviews for Pen & Muse. I like to be reading several things at once. Unless the book is really good and I get sucked in and can't read anything else (which hasn't happened in awhile), I generally am reading several books at once.

I'm also working on another Day Zero List reading goal right now. I'm reading Going Rogue by Sarah Palin, because one of my goals was to read books written by authors I disagree with or dislike. So I'm trying to understand the woman behind the book, and I will probably be blogging about my experience on here. So wish me luck! I'm off to the library to pick up Mr. Tom! :-)

I've even bought it, I should say, I'm just looking for a time when I can really sit down with it. One of my favorite things about Pillars was really sinking into that prose. He is just a phenomenal writer.
